Florida Reporter’s New Job Takes Him Farther East

Joshua Repp, reporter for WBBH in Ft. Myers, Fla., will soon be taking a new job within the broadcast television industry, but he won’t be traveling that far to fill it.

The News-Press reports Repp leaves the NBC affiliate for WPEC-TV, the CBS station in the West Palm Beach-Ft. Pierce market.

Knoxville Employees Defend Former News Director After His Unexplained Departure

Earlier this month, WBIR news director Bill Shory left the Knoxville, Tenn., NBC affiliate after 8 years at the helm of the station.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reports he said he was proud of the work they accomplished over that time, but others said his departure was representative of a “hostile work environment” he allegedly created.

South Mississippi Affiliate to Give Residents CBS Programming Through Subchannel

The ABC affiliate for Biloxi, Miss., WLOX, will soon be adding another affiliate’s programming to one of its digital subchannels: CBS.

The new subchannel kicks off next month.

WLOX’s website indicates the CBS programming will replace the current 24-hour weather programming on one of the subchannels.

Two Members of Management, EP Gone from Little Rock Station

We’ve all heard of spring cleaning, but this is ridiculous: three newsroom managers have ended their employment with Little Rock NBC affiliate KARK this month.

Whether or not that was a choice made by management or the three employees, however, is unclear.

Joe Oliver, who viewers in Orlando may remember as a former WESH anchor, has been speaking out to national and cable news organizations about the Trayvon Martin shooting incident.

Oliver, who worked at the Orlando NBC affiliate from 2004-2007, said he was not playing the role of “George [Zimmerman’s] black friend” in this case.

Current Phoenix, Ariz., weekend anchor Peter Busch will soon be moving to the Sunshine State.

TVNewser reports Busch starts as primary anchor for Ft. Myers NBC affiliate WBBH in May.

He will remain on the air at KPHO until then, but that’s not all.

Lawsuit Against Mississippi Anchorman Dismissed

A lawsuit filed by the estate of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. against a Jackson, Miss., anchor has been dismissed by the judge.

The Washington Post reports the lawsuit, filed in September in U.S. District Court in Jackson, targeted WLBT-TV anchor and reporter Howard Ballou.

The suit alleges Ballou, who works for the NBC affiliate in Jackson, kept documents belonging to King.

Mobile Station Upgrading Studio for HD Plunge

Mobile-Pensacola FOX affiliate, WALA will soon celebrate two new changes to its newscast operations: a new studio and local newscasts in high definition.

Though initially mentioned on the station’s Facebook page earlier this month, NewscastStudio had a posted photo of what viewers can expect.

Ft. Myers Anchor Makes Leap to Missouri

He’s been with WZVN and WBBH for more than a decade, but in May, anchor Len Jennings will be trading in that sun and surf for Missouri, a state many say hinges between Southern hospitality and Northern sensibility.

Jennings goes to ABC affiliate KMBC after anchoring newscasts for WZVN (the ABC affiliate in Ft. Myers) for nearly 10 years. He’s been a primary anchor on sister station and NBC affiliate WBBH for a year.

Birmingham Met: Tornado Siren Mentality Could “Cost Lives”

Meteorologist James Spann, known for his severe weather coverage throughout the state of Alabama, criticized the warning system used by many to alert countless residents of severe weather.

He told NPR in an interview earlier this week that people can become too reliant on sirens.

“In the siren mentality, it’s the idea that you’re always going to hear a tornado siren before a tornado strikes,” Spann said in the article. “And I believe it’s a farce.”
