South Florida Station Outsources Morning Show in Effort to Increase Ratings

Corporate-owned stations certainly have their perks, especially when they’re part of the Tribune Company family.

SFLTV.com reports CW affiliate WSFL-TV, based in Miami, Fla., is already one week into airing a new morning show which is produced and put together hundreds of miles from sunny South Florida.

Anytime someone’s career in broadcast television lasts more than 20 years, it’s something of a milestone to me.

Why? From what some of these blog’s readers tell me (some of whom work in the industry), it’s an incredibly taxing job, especially for those who work in management. Constant deadlines, constant pressure and constant work make this a “love it or leave it”  profession.

Reporter at Miami Fox Affiliate Scores Job With CNN Newsource

René Marsh, a reporter for Miami Fox affiliate WSVN, will become a national correspondent for CNN Newsource, a division of the cable news juggernaut that supplies stories for participating affiliate stations nationwide.

A release on CNN Press Room (the PR arm of the network) reports Marsh will be stationed primarily in Washington, DC, but will report in locations throughout the U.S. She had previously worked more than four years in Miami and served as an investigative reporter and weekend anchor at Albany, N.Y., station WRGB.

Sunbeam Stations Reach Transmission Agreement With DirecTV In Time For Super Bowl

Two stations which have been in contract disputes with satellite provider DirecTV since Jan. 13 will now be carried, just in time for Super Bowl XLVI.

WHDH-TV in Boston and WSVN in Miami are owned by Sunbeam Television Corporation.

On Thursday, WHDH general manager Chris Wayland released a statement.

Fort Myers Anchor “On Leave” Because of Husband’s Congressional Run

Citing a possible conflict of interest, WFTX anchor Amy Wegmann has announced she will take a leave of absence from the Ft. Myers-Naples FOX affiliate to concentrate on helping her husband’s bid for Congress.

Wegmann is married to Trey Radel. The leave allows her to stand at her husband’s side during the campaign without having to choose to be impartial by remaining at the station. It also helps the station’s political coverage stay–what’s that FOX slogan?–fair and balanced.

Mississippi TV Station Gets New Chief Meteorologist

Keith Gibson, former chief meteorologist at FOX affiliate KEVN in Rapid City, S.D., is now the new chief meteorologist for WCBI-TV, the CBS affiliate for the Columbus-Tupelo-West Point-Houston market.

Gibson’s career has taken him through both Dakotas and the Mississippi Delta, where he once worked at WABG, an ABC affiliate.

Gibson replaces Rob Smith, who’s been at the station for 18 years. A Facebook update on the station’s weather page states Smith is leaving to “concentrate on his studies” as he returns to school, but Smith will be around to fill in from time to time.

Alabama Meteorologist Criticizes Diane Sawyer Over Tornado Warning Claims

Chief Meteorologist James Spann, who works for ABC affiliate WBMA in Birmingham, Ala., isn’t too thrilled with Diane Sawyer.

It’s because of a claim she made on a Monday broadcast of “World News Tonight,” saying those tornadoes which came through the state in the wee hours of the morning “took the South by surprise, no warning.”

Former Ft. Myers Reporter Pegged as National Correspondent for ABC News

Southwest Floridians will be able to see more of former investigative reporter Mark Greenblatt because he just got a new gig with a lot of national exposure.

The News-Press’ Chris Wadsworth reports Greenblatt, who had worked for WBBH-TV (NBC2) in the early 2000s, has been named a national correspondent for ABC News.

Tallahassee Station Loses ND After Three Years

Bill Cummings, former news director for WTXL-TV in Tallahassee, Fla., will be leaving one coast for another, sort of.

Industry firm Rick Gevers reports Cummings will become the news director for KSWT-TV, a CBS affiliate in Yuma, Ariz. (please, no Western jokes).

Cummings had been with the Florida ABC affiliate for three years.

From Sales to Management: Bunting Gets High-Level Station Job in Alabama

Mark Bunting, WKRG’s director of revenue, has been named vice president and general manager of the Mobile, Ala., CBS affiliate.

Local television news blog TVSpy reports the station’s parent company, Media General, announced the position change today.
