New Partnership Unites FOX O&Os and AccuWeather

Eleven markets (four in South TV News’ coverage area) with FOX owned-and-operated affiliates will soon have another tool in their arsenal in terms of weather coverage: AccuWeather.

The stations will utilize AccuWeather’s content on-air and online at three stations in Florida (Tampa, Orlando, Gainesville) and one in Tennessee (Memphis), according to an article from Broadcasting & Cable.

So what do they get as part of the deal? A separate streaming video channel that will more than likely be relegated to a digital subchannel, for one.

Ron Stitt, vice president of digital media and internet operations for Fox Television Stations, said stations “will offer their local viewers a 24/7 live streaming video weather channel provided by AccuWeather.”

It doesn’t end there, though. The content will extend to online offerings as well.

“Weather is one of the most important services our stations provide to their communities and has long been a major focus for [FOX],” Stitt said.

The partnership will not extend into markets where preexisting relationships already exist with AccuWeather and other stations; still, it seems to be a bold move for these FOX affiliates, especially with an extra subchannel thrown in for good measure.

That’s easily the best selling point here.
