To those who live in the Detroit area, the name Steve Wilson is synonymous with hard-hitting journalism.

Or at least it was until 2010, when Wilson’s contract wasn’t renewed at WXYZ, the ABC affiliate in Detroit.

Two years later, he’s making his return to journalism.

Crain’s Detroit Business reports Wilson has been hired as First Coast News’ investigative reporter. Technically, that means he’ll be reporting for two stations, WJXX and WTLV, because the joint operation is a Gannett-owned duopoly.

Wilson’s plans were made known last week by a fellow Detroit reporter on Twitter and later confirmed by Wilson himself.

In a Michigan industry forum, Wilson wrote about the move.

From the article:

“Since this Gannett duopoly here is both the NBC and ABC stations, the current plan is for a big launch of the new I-team starting with opening night of the Summer Olympics. I invite Detroit pals to come take a look,” Wilson wrote.

As for why he left, a contract dispute essentially ended the reporter’s career after 9 years with WXYZ.

Wilson’s been in the business for decades; he also served as a reporter on the syndicated news magazine “Inside Edition” at one point.

Congratulations on the new move, Steve!
