Nexstar Broadcasting, which operates or owns 55 television stations across the U.S., has announced a 19.6 percent increase in net revenue for the first quarter of 2012 versus last year.

Two of those stations Nexstar owns are in the South TV News viewing area: KARK in Little Rock, Ark., and KTAL in Shreveport, La.

The increase works out to a record $83.6 million for the company, according to a news release from Nexstar’s website.

Every category saw increases over last year except one, which reflected compensation given to the stations from the major networks for affiliation.

Local and national advertising revenue dollars also rose.

You may have also noticed a trend recently with more stations opting to begin charging retransmission fees to cable and satellite providers. Dozens of Nexstar stations began doing that this year, resulting in a 70.2 percent increase in retrans fees versus last year: the decisions netted the company nearly $6 million dollars alone and are projected to bring in even more for the second quarter.

From the release:

“In summary, Nexstar’s record first quarter results again highlight the value of our focus on generating new local direct advertising and revenue diversification as well as completing select accretive station acquisitions,” company chairman, president and CEO Perry A. Sook said in the release. Nexstar is well positioned to remain an industry leader in driving core advertising increases and 2012 presents prospects for continued growth from all of our revenue sources, including significant political advertising revenue contributions.”

In fact, political revenues increased more than any other category by percent: raking in an extra $2.2 million over last year, which equates to a 398.9 percent increase.

Nexstar Broadcasting Group, Inc., trades on the NASDAQ under the ticker symbol “NXST.”
