A television anchor and producer with TV Azteca has been charged with grand theft after police say he stole chairs and carpet from his downstairs neighbor in Doral, Fla., and it was his performance on camera that tipped them off.

A security camera, that is.

The Miami Herald reports 48-year-old Frank Cairo, who’s worked in mostly Spanish-language television jobs since 1982, can be seen on surveillance video with a friend during the alleged theft, according to authorities.

Doral Police Chief Rick Gomez said Cairo (whose real name is Ivan Valdes) justified entering the apartment because he said he thought it was abandoned.

The owners actually live in Mexico.

Cairo said the video doesn’t give the entire story.

“I make half a million dollars and don’t need to be stealing,” Cairo told the Miami Herald.

Gomez said a set of chairs and patio carpet were missing; the items were valued at $500.

The grand theft charge is considered a felony.
