In the latest round of broadcast television cuts, eight people have been laid off from Panama City, Fla., FOX affiliate WPGX.

Raycom Media, which owns the station, initiated the cuts in a downsizing move, according to the Panama City News Herald.

Raycom Media spokesperson Jeff Rosser told the publication six full-time and two part-time employees were let go.

In another consolidation move, the “headquarters” for the Dothan, Ala.-Panama City FOX stations would be Birmingham.

From the article:

“There have been changes,” Rosser said. “Our industry got reset in 2008 and we are adjusting.”

Editorial comment: It’s always a good sign when a corporation cites hard times from four years ago as the reason for its recently-announced layoff decision.

Rosser also said the Panama City station would stay open and have local content, but exactly how much of that would originate from the Panama City area has not been released.

Wonder how many other Raycom stations have fallen on hard times this year? So far, only WPGX has been dealt a round of layoffs.
