Tennessee, Mississippi Stations Get New News Directors

In ABC, CBS, Columbus-Tupelo-West Point-Houston, Hirings, Jackson-Madison, Mississippi, Tennessee on May 9, 2012 at 2:21 pm

Jackson, Tenn., ABC affiliate WBBJ-TV has tapped Keith Baker to be the news director there.

Industry firm Rick Gevers reports Baker has roots in the area and comes from WCTI-TV in New Bern, N.C., where he served as assistant news director. Baker also has major market experience in Tampa and Pittsburgh.

Baker replaces Robert Davidson, who left to take a job opening in the Columbus-Tupelo-West Point-Houston market, at CBS affiliate WCBI-TV.

He had worked at WBBJ-TV for the last two years, according to the website.

It’s an interesting move for Davidson because he’s worked in the Columbus market before, as the news director for rival WTVA-TV.

As South TV News first reported in March, a job opening for former WCBI news director Russ Geller had actually been posted before he left.

Rick Gevers reports Geller is now working in Memphis, Tenn., as an executive producer for WHBQ-TV, the FOX affiliate there.

UPDATE: Geller tells South TV News the decision to leave WCBI was his own because he wanted to accept the EP job. He said he gave the general manager a month’s notice to find a replacement, which ended up being Davidson.
