Orlando ABC affiliate WFTV-Channel 9 has a new face for those morning traffic reports. Gone is Bob Baxa, who helped commuters with congestion information for nearly 10 years.

Orlando Sentinel‘s Hal Boedeker reports the decision was based on the fact that Baxa wasn’t actually an employee of the station.

Racquel Asa, who comes from WSYR in Syracuse, N.Y., replaces Baxa. She’ll also perform double duty as a dayside reporter after traffic duty.

From Boedeker’s blog:

“We wanted to do something different,” [WFTV news director Bob] Jordan said. “We had it in the budget to grow on the reporter side.”

Jordan also revealed in the blog that anchor Vanessa Welch will be on maternity leave until the end of the month. She’ll anchor the station’s 5 and 5:30 p.m. newscasts.

Here’s hoping other stations start budgeting for more reporters as well, since Asa will be doing more than her predecessor did.

  1. bad call on you….i loved bob baxa, not too sure this new woman knows her stuff!

  2. Once you stripped away his personality… it was just a matter of time. I’m switching to Fox 35 News!
